
Dr. Tets Kimura is a scholar, author, journalist, and translator, specialising in art and cultural history, fashion studies, Asian/Japanese studies, and International Relations. He is based in Adelaide, South Australia, and has an affiliation with Flinders University. His interdisciplinary research blends various theories to create innovative knowledge.
As the primary editor of the edited volume Exporting Japanese Aesthetics (Sussex, 2020; Liverpool University Press, 2022), Dr. Kimura has made significant contributions to academia. Currently, he is diligently working on his upcoming book based on his paper presented at the European Association for Japanese Studies (EAJS) Conference (The End of Fashion Conference) in Japan entitled Fashion, Soft Power, and Cultural Diplomacy: A Case Study of Japanese Fashion in Australia.
His scholarly papers grace the pages of esteemed academic journals such as Fashion Theory, Journal of Australian Studies, and Asian Anthropology.
With an extensive teaching background, Dr. Kimura has shared his expertise internationally at institutions like Flinders University (Australia), Fukuoka Women’s University (Japan), and National Chengchi University (Taiwan). He holds degrees from Flinders University and the University of South Australia, supplemented by coursework completed at the University of East Anglia (UK) and Pukyong National University (South Korea).
Dr. Kimura’s fascination with international affairs ignited during his early years as a philosophy student, stimulated by learning various ideas from different parts of the world. This passion led him to explore over 70 countries and territories, enriching his worldview. Notably, as a journalist, he reported from Baghdad in 2004 and covered the last five Australian federal elections for the Japanese Mainichi national newspaper.
Deeply connected to the art sector, Dr. Kimura has curated exhibitions and facilitated translations for renowned projects. His involvement includes creating English subtitles for internationally-acclaimed Japanese director Kuro Tanino’s The Dark Master at the 2019 OzAsia Festival and curating an exhibition of art by Japanese internees from Australasian camps at the Showa no Kurashi Museum in Tokyo in 2022.
Professionally bilingual, Dr. Kimura holds a NAATI qualification for translation/interpreting between English and Japanese. He offers his expertise as a Japanese language interpreter for governmental sectors, private organisations, and the media industry. Currently, he is studying Chinese in his spare time.
